Project Overview
The Ashley River Crossing project is a bicycle and pedestrian bridge that will connect West Ashley and Downtown Charleston. The bridge will provide a safe connection between the West Ashley Greenway, Brittlebank Park and the Ashley River Walk. Watch the video below for a brief overview of the project.
Why do we need a bridge?
Almost half of the City’s population resides in West Ashley, yet there is no safe pedestrian or bicycle connection between West Ashley and the peninsula. The introduction of the Ashley River Crossing unlocks miles of existing and future multi-use and trail systems increasing access to jobs, schools, and other amenities for area residents and visitors.
Expanding Existing Resources
The West Ashley area is known for its sense of community. Contributing to this community identity are neighborhood parks, farmers markets, and bike paths. These unique resources include:

8.5 miles of multi-use recreational pathways
The West Ashley BIKEWAY
2.5 miles of paved bike paths connected to the East Coast Greenway Route
The East Coast Greenway Route
A 3,000-mile route of urban trails running from Maine into Florida
Over 4,500 residents and 613 area businesses are located within a quarter mile of these resources and over 73,000 jobs are within a 20-minute bike ride to the bridge. By connecting these areas to Downtown, we expand access to recreational, economic, and community opportunities across the region.
